Laura Ritland

Poet, scholar, critic, and educator.

Teaching

For over a decade, I have taught courses in literature, composition, and creative writing within and sometimes outside of the university. I view this work as coextensive with the job of a scholar, writer, and intellectual: teaching is how I make the often-inaccessible knowledge of the university accessible; it is how I give back to communities around me; and how I try to make a difference in the world.

My teaching philosophy is guided by the principle that the success of a classroom depends on the escape of its own containment. Put more simply, what this means is that whatever I teach should matter to my students; it should respond to their lived presents, illuminate our shared cultural and political world, and equip them to become thoughtful and reflective agents of change.

Selected Courses Designed & Taught

“The Critic in Community” – New York University, Liberal Studies Fall 2025

“Practical Criticism” – University of California, Berkeley, Department of English – Fall 2022

“Introduction to the Writing of Verse” (Poetry Workshop) – University of California, Berkeley, Department of English – Spring 2020

“On Happiness” – University of California, Berkeley, Department of English – Fall 2019

Mentorship & Extramural Teaching

Beyond these university courses, I have also led creative writing workshops for high school students across the Bay Area through the New Literary Project. I have served as a mentor for community college transfer and first-generation university students at UC Berkeley through the mentorship program “Berkeley Connect.”

Teaching Consultation & Pedagogy Workshops

Finally, I have also given workshops on university pedagogy itself as a teaching consultant at the UC Berkeley Graduate Student Instructor Teaching and Resource Center from 2023-25. Workshop topics included: inclusive teaching practices, developing writing-based assignments and activities, general course design, and Universal Design for Learning.
